SPF: Not So Ill-fated

This week for the same setting and the same characters I ended up with two different stories and couldn’t choose between them. If you have the time and the inclination, I would appreciate if you would click here for the second version and do let me know your thoughts. From the comments, I thought it best to put the (edited) note right on top.

Not So Ill-fated

Words 196

“Let’s go for a walk?” She wasn’t too comfortable with being alone with her husband of a few hours. They had just checked into a hotel on their way to Darjeeling for their honeymoon.

He shrugged. “Sure.”

Walking down the deserted streets, a wave of nausea shook her. Sweating, she doubled over in agony.

Saina!” Tarun supported her. “Are you okay?”

“I…I…know this place,” she gasped. She raised a shaking finger. “I was lynched by a mob…” she shivered and shook unable to speak more.

He froze. Had be been conned into marrying a mad woman?

He steadied. “Relax. Let’s go back. I think you’re overtired.”

“I can see it all so clearly.” She went on unheeding. “So many people and I alone. Suki…”

“Suki?”

“My love. We wanted to marry but I was older than him.”

“Was Suki also killed?”

“He ran away.” She pointed. “He used to live in that house.” She frowned. “But it wasn’t so rundown or,” she gasped.

A portly balding man wearing a singlet poked his head out of the door and spat on the road.

She linked her arm with Tarun’s and smiled up at him. “Let’s go back.”

Bhaisahab* could you get me a job?” she burst out.

“But why?” He stared.

“Now I’ve time on my hands and…everything’s so expensive.”

“Why worry about expenses when your sons are earning well?” He laughed.

“Yes.” She hesitated. “But, they have their own expenses. If I had a job…”

“What about your health?”

“Exactly. Medicines are so expensive.”

“It’d be better to ask your sons.”

Why should I have to ask?” She stood up. “Ask your Father, ask your husband and now beg from my sons?”

“It’s not begging. It’s your right.”

“If I have to ask, it’s begging.”

*Bhaishaab: Elder brother and commonly used to address an older male relative, family friend, neighbor or even an acquaintance or stranger on the road.

Perhaps the link to the photo may not be clear but the color white in India is associated with a widow – I hope that came through (that she’s a widow!)?

Thanks for reading – look forward to your reaction and comments. 🙂

CFFC: Colors of S

How many colors do you know that begin with S? Scarlet comes to mind, perhaps Silver but then the mind draws a blank. But why worry when Google is at hand right? So armed with help from the internet I attempt to rise to Cee’s challenge of photos with colors beginning with S.

And here we go:

CactiBy the roadside, a triple bonanza – sandy brown earth, school bus yellow cacti and safety orange flowers 😀

Scarlett sign

A scarlet sign. I somehow found the sign terribly amusing – Emergency exit to Human Evolution!

Safron liftA saffron frame to an ancient lift

Salmon tileA nanny trying to feed a toddler playing on salmon tiles

Ggaon

Sandy brown wall hangings

SculptureA sandy brown sculpture from ancient times

SlateA slate grey sculpture of Devi Durga as she destroys Mahishasura

Silver peacockA peacock with an intricately designed silver tail

Silver scarletA silver scarlet monster contraption at the airport

Light fixA safety orange light fixer on the roads of Delhi

ParrotA shamrock green monster parrot

Hope you liked my selection of S colors! Have a super day.

It was tough to leave home, leave Mamma and go to school.

Don’t worry sweetie, Mamma promised, it’s just for a few hours.

Until it was time to go to the hostel.

Don’t worry, you’ll be home for the vacations.

Then she was married.

Mamma, I want to go home.

His home is your home.

But he keeps telling me to get out of his home.

Ignore him. You have full legal rights…

I don’t like staying where I’m not wanted.

 You can’t live alone!

 But…

 What would people say?

 But…

Just grit your teeth and hang on. I did.

WPC: Some Singular Snaps

The Daily Post’s Weekly Photo Challenge is to post favorite photos from 2017. I don’t like to play favorites yet there are some photos which stand out from my last trip which I thought could fit the bill. So here they are:

Screen Shot 2018-01-01 at 7.48.19 pmBirds of a feather separated by a crow 😀

Traffic

Just watching the traffic go by. They come and go yet

Lonely travelerthe intrepid traveler plods on and on undeterred and unmindful of the swirling traffic.

FrogCaught the Prince charming hiding amongst the shrubbery on a winter night stroll

GardenA dear friend’s blossoming kitchen garden 🙂

Magic eye

Now for some mystery. Notice anything odd about the door? Go on scroll up and have another look, a third if you so wish. Well did you see it? The Magic Eye? Why on earth it it at that height? Perhaps the carpenter was drunk and decided to fix it while lying down? Or do you have a better solution?

LightOkay now for some real magic. Can you see the light on the wall? Duh. Of course you can.

No lightWell can you see it now? Same frame, same place, but no light! Magic isnt it? 😉

Treewall

This tree was apparently cut down to build a wall. She doesnt much care for the idea does she?

Awaits springAnd finally a cold deary winter morning with the promise of spring. Got my eye on those freshly prepared beds – coming up in just a couple of months 🙂

Cheers to you from 2017 in this New Year with lots and lots of good wishes. Hope you liked!

Irrepressible

Here’s wishing all of you a wonderful fresh happy and healthy New Year. Like this tree may nothing faze you or get you down!

CFFC: Some Quick Quirky Ones

Just in time for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge – well I’m going to pretend I am anyway 😉 A challenging challenge as usual – photos have to have the letter Q in them and the grey cells got ticking only just now 😀 For quite a while I felt all hazy and unclear, and couldn’t see the way ahead

Opaque landscapeMuch like this opaque foggy or is it smoggy landscape

BouquetThen as the mist cleared I found this bouquet of trees – isnt it a lovely arrangement?

EquineRejuvenated we went to the Kolkata museum and admired the equine sculpture, though I do wonder why it looks so sad. Perhaps it is just exhausted, like I was

ConquerAfter the archeological exhibits I gave up and collapsed on the bench unable to even conceive of conquering the rest of the museum.

Queen of storeWhile shopping we were lucky to catch a glimpse of the store Queen. Though as you can see she is very camera shy and kept shaking her head. Or was it my hand in such exalted company?

Quick chaiTired and desperate for a quick cuppa chai we ordered it. Did you know tea comes in this beautiful paper flask? 🙂

Square boxStarving, we ordered dinner soon after and it arrived hot spicy and delicious in a square box 😀

QuicheDesperate for some quiche we tried calling Hogg’s Room but sadly they didnt deliver from Kolkata to Mumbai 😉

QuotaTaking inspiration from these two blissful canines we too decided to call it a day and catch up on our quota of sleep.

Quirky clock

But before I take your leave I must show you this quirky clock. Can you tell the time?

Thanks for visiting and do let me know in the comments how many rules were flouted in the making of this post 😀

SPF: A White Wedding

220-12-december-17th-2017

A White Wedding

Words: 200

It was the most exciting Christmas ever, pretty much like her tenth birthday when she had got a puppy and a bicycle. And now after 25 years, her prayers had been answered with not one but two suitors.

“So Ryan or Dave?” Sheila asked.

“Dave is just a friend!” Fiona protested.

“Who loves you…”

“But I love Ryan,” Fiona wore a dreamy look. “I can’t believe that someone like Ryan could ever…”

“So you are grateful and overwhelmed with his attention?”

“I didn’t say that!”

“Seemed like it to me.” Sheila shrugged.

“Why do you say that?”

“Here you are at the ripe old age of 35, a self-made entrepreneur, no expectations of getting married ever, and in comes Ryan, the dashing handsome rake that you’ve always been warned about…”

“Yes I know!” groaned Fiona. “Dave is safe while Ryan is like skydiving. My brain says one thing and my heart another. It’s a tough call.”

“If you had to choose one, the puppy or the bike, what would you choose?”

“Mr. Pups for his unconditional love. The bike gave me a lot of grief. Even broke my leg.”

“Well, there’s your answer.”

“I do.” Fiona smiled mistily at Ryan.
