WPC: Resilient

resilient

The rickshaw puller of Kolkata, the only city in India to have the hand pulled rickshaw. Muffled up to face the winter chill, he cannot quite hide his frail frame or toothless gums. He ‘enjoys’ a brief respite and fiddles with a pink radio, perhaps gifted by a doting daughter or grand-daughter.

The very concept of people physically lugging their counterparts around the city, often bare feet, is disturbing to say the least. Yet they continue to ply the streets of Kolkata providing a cheap and reliable transportation for short distances, especially convenient for schoolchildren. Which is not to say adults do not use them. They do and indeed even I have also utilized their services. Several years ago.

To ride or not to ride this anachronistic symbol of human degradation is a tricky question. We can easily take the moral high ground and shun them (like I do now). There are numerous other and indeed more convenient modes of transport.  But the fact is that our ‘clear conscience’ is not going to fill their empty stomachs. They are eager to take you for a drive and idle time is not a matter of ‘enjoyment’ but a matter of concern. They may just have to go to bed hungry in order to honor our commitment to eradicating ‘social injustice’.

Looking at them, interacting with them, their fortitude, stoicism and innocent smiles as they battle the elements and extreme weather conditions – blistering summers, torrential downpours, flooded streets, chilly winds (and pay part of their meager earnings to battle their court case) – resilient is what comes to mind.

Along with respect and admiration.

Additional note: In 2006, the West Bengal State Government made arrangements to ban hand pulled rickshaws but concerns about their means of livelihood took the matter to court, where it is still stuck, mired in bureaucratic red-tape and political agendas. But a stop has been put on new registration of rickshaw pullers. Currently, there are reportedly about 6000 registered rickshaw pullers although according to some there are about 25,000 unregistered pullers. There is some talk of battery-operated rickshaws but that is still to see the light of day. But implementing these is also not a simple matter. Those who have been running the streets for 50 years are not too keen on learning new techniques at their age.

Till the hand pulled rickshaw is completely phased out or they are rehabilitated, I for one would advise visitors to try the rickshaw. With a rider. Please do not haggle with the pullers.

Thanks for visiting – would love to know your reactions, comments and suggestions.

As the year draws to a close, the Daily Post’s Weekly Photo Challenge prompts us to reflect on our own path. When the year began, I had no inkling of what upheavals lay ahead. And the end of the year has thrown up another kind of twist. As I grapple with the events of the year gone by and consider the myriad developments that have occurred over the years, I can only say that:

A visit to the beach is always relaxing 🙂

Playgrounds are usually high-energy places but this one looks peaceful and relaxed. I was really tempted to try the see-saw 😀

stones

These two boulders look as if they are relaxing against each other don’t they?

Akka Thangi Gudda (Sister Stones or Jealous Sisters) is a natural rock formation. It is a landmark on the main road to the temple town of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka, India.

There are several stories associated with this rock formation. According to one of the most popular legends, the two stones were actually two sisters who bad-mouthed and ridiculed the beautiful town of Hampi. Angered, the reigning Goddess of Hampi cursed the two sisters and turned them into stones.

Have a relaxed week ahead 🙂

Hot on the Trail

Not so long ago, just two months ago to be more precise, I was busy Chasing Spring – remember? And I had hinted then that I was hot on the trail of something else as well. It is time for the unveiling.

I was trying to track Mother Nature as she dealt with the changing seasons – the bitter chill and frost of the winter to the unrelenting merciless sun rays  – with her usual no-nonsense nonchalance and elan.

Tip: Taking a leaf from Mother Nature’s kitty, for best results, scroll down at a leisurely pace.

Here’s the first set of pics taken on 12 March 2016 around the campus

And then comes the next set taken about exactly a month later, i.e on or around 12th of April 2016

The temperatures skyrocketed as we slipped into May. Whilst mere mortals writhed and groaned under the weight of the blazing sun, she decided if you can’t beat them join them.

Now just hold your breath:-

I dare not draw the curtains even in this heat for fear of missing out the breathtaking sight of the Amaltas in full glorious bloom – enough left over to carpet the roads as well.

I am completely bowled over, fascinated and enthralled by the complete wardrobe overhaul without moving an inch!

And all from thin air…

I wonder if trees get a headache while in the sun? If not, I am all for being born as a tree in my next life 😀

After this, I wouldnt blame you if you didnt much care for Rajani’s escapades – well anyhow here’s Chapter 59.

And a bonus short story – The Trap – do let me know what you think!

Chasing Spring

Hello peepools! How you doin? Better, one hopes, now that spring is in the air and summer is hot at our heels. In Delhi, this is probably the best time of the year – flowers blooming, the skyline dotted with flame of the forest. Delhites, take a moment, to look at the horizon while you travel to work or go back home – you can’t miss the red blooms that pop up from the most unexpected and drab buildings. Trust me, it’s not a sight to be missed.

Every year, Delhi just seems to burst into a riot of color almost overnight. This year I was determined to stalk it – almost missed it, but managed to catch the tail of the fire. Have a look.

March 7, 2016

Looking awesome isn’t it? But then look what happened today!

March 14, 2016

Back to dull and dreary. A unseasonal storm blew away the colors of spring too 😦

But never mind, spring will come again 🙂

What about your place? Anything special going on over there? Like to share something? Come on say something – anything. Feels rather awkward – to be the only one blabbering on and on 😀

Oh well, here I go again – Chapter 43 but before that let Calvin fill in the awkward silence shall we?

And anyone care for the Blog Index?

Edit: Btw, hope you didnt miss the mango blossoms? Yummmm 😉

On Top of the World

Yohoo friends! I am back thumbs up Anyone miss me? sighNever mind. Anyway, I had a blast catching up with friends – school friends whom I met after decades! partyI could tell you the exact number of decades, years, months and perhaps even days, but then that would be telling ehsmug

Suffice to say I was on the top of the world – literally and figuratively. Have a look:-

It was a truly exhilarating and picturesque ride through the clouds. Sighhh…ah well, nothing lasts forever right? Besides all good things come to an end so that we may go on to experience better things!

So now that we are back on terra firma lets see what been happening on Rajaniland shall we? Here’s Chapter 34 but before then, a look at Calvin.

Thought for the day:

A pessimist sees only the dark side of the clouds, and mopes; a philosopher sees both sides, and shrugs; an optimist doesn't see the clouds at all — he's walking on them. ~Leonard Louis Levinson

More Glimpses of Jaipur

The Maharaja (sorry forgot which one) only used Ganga jal for drinking and bathing purposes. This is a pure silver kalash weighing 340 kgs which held the Ganga jal for his personal use. When the Maharaja decided to visit the UK, two of these (filled with Ganga jal) were shipped to the UK.
