Trees shall Rule the World

At Ross Island, one of the islands of the Andamans and Nicobar islands, India.

Ross island was the headquarters of the Indian Penal Settlement for nearly 80 years.

Remnants of an opulent past in the ruins of the church, swimming pool and the chief commissioner’s residence with its huge gardens and grand ballrooms.

Was this once a ballroom or part of the Commissioner’s bungalow?

More power to the trees! What say you?

Big Banyan Tree

It’s time for Sunday Trees -243

Botanics4
The Great Banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) at Botanic Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata, India

Believe it or not, that is not a forest but a single tree. One that is more than 250 years old. The area occupied by the tree is about 18,918 square meters (about 1.5 hectares or 4 acres). The present crown of the tree has a circumference of 486 m. and the highest branch rises to 24.5 m. Interestingly, the tree survives without its main trunk, which decayed and had to be removed in 1925.

View from inside/under the tree

Instead, it has a large number of aerial roots, which grow from the branches and run vertically to the ground and looks like it has so many trunks. It is estimated that at present it has 3772 aerial roots reaching down to the ground as a prop root. Fascinating isn’t it?

Trees at Home

This is my response the the challenge Sunday Trees – 242. I am fascinated by trees and am quite infamous for just photographing trees while on vacations! But I am diversifying πŸ˜‰ Anyway I do have lots of photos of trees and always looking for a reason to share πŸ™‚

100_1490.jpg

This particular photo is taken just above the gate at my parents’ place – that’s the eucalyptus at the center (I think!). One of my favorite pictures, perhaps because it reminds me of home.Β  What do you think?

Have a great Sunday πŸ™‚

Hot on the Trail

Not so long ago, just two months ago to be more precise, I was busy Chasing Spring – remember? And I had hinted then that I was hot on the trail of something else as well. It is time for the unveiling.

I was trying to track Mother Nature as she dealt with the changing seasons – the bitter chill and frost of the winter to the unrelenting merciless sun raysΒ  – with her usual no-nonsense nonchalance and elan.

Tip: Taking a leaf from Mother Nature’s kitty, for best results, scroll down at a leisurely pace.

Here’s the first set of pics taken on 12 March 2016 around the campus

And then comes the next set taken about exactly a month later, i.e on or around 12th of April 2016

The temperatures skyrocketed as we slipped into May. Whilst mere mortals writhed and groaned under the weight of the blazing sun, she decided if you can’t beat them join them.

Now just hold your breath:-

I dare not draw the curtains even in this heat for fear of missing out the breathtaking sight of the Amaltas in full glorious bloom – enough left over to carpet the roads as well.

I am completely bowled over, fascinated and enthralled by the complete wardrobe overhaul without moving an inch!

And all from thin air…

I wonder if trees get a headache while in the sun? If not, I am all for being born as a tree in my next life πŸ˜€

After this, I wouldnt blame you if you didnt much care for Rajani’s escapades – well anyhow here’s Chapter 59.

And a bonus short story – The Trap – do let me know what you think!

Chasing Spring

Hello peepools! How you doin? Better, one hopes, now that spring is in the air and summer is hot at our heels. In Delhi, this is probably the best time of the year – flowers blooming, the skyline dotted with flame of the forest. Delhites, take a moment, to look at the horizon while you travel to work or go back home – you can’t miss the red blooms that pop up from the most unexpected and drab buildings. Trust me, it’s not a sight to be missed.

Every year, Delhi just seems to burst into a riot of color almost overnight. This year I was determined to stalk it – almost missed it, but managed to catch the tail of the fire. Have a look.

March 7, 2016

Looking awesome isn’t it? But then look what happened today!

March 14, 2016

Back to dull and dreary. A unseasonal storm blew away the colors of spring too 😦

But never mind, spring will come again πŸ™‚

What about your place? Anything special going on over there? Like to share something? Come on say something – anything. Feels rather awkward – to be the only one blabbering on and on πŸ˜€

Oh well, here I go again – Chapter 43 but before that let Calvin fill in the awkward silence shall we?

And anyone care for the Blog Index?

And I wait in a fever of impatience.
Edit: Btw, hope you didnt miss the mango blossoms? Yummmm πŸ˜‰
