 “I love you.”

Her hands stilled. Thankfully the terrace was deserted.

She peered at him from behind the sari as she hung it out to dry.

He was looking at the horizon.

“You’re aware of our financial condition. As the eldest, I have responsibilities.”

 And?

“I’ve got a job in Jaipur. I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

What about me?

“I have nothing to offer you.”

Then why say you love me?

“Ma’s going to talk to your mother.”

Her eyes flew to his.

“Will you take my family as yours?”

She drew patterns with her toe.

A/N Well what do you think? Will she won’t she? Even I wondered and ended up writing (and posting) two more scenarios – Beyond and Lost and Found. Forgive me Rochelle for testing your kindness.

Written for the Friday Fictioneers – a story in 100 words or less. Thank you to Rochelle for hosting this inspiring challenge and Danny Bowman for the amazing photo that prompted the stories to write themselves. To read the other stories inspired by this prompt click here.

I love you

Her heart fluttered. A small smile played about her lips.

He knew how to pull her strings.

She hung the sari out to dry and looked out into the horizon.

Somewhere beyond the mountains was her love, alone.

While she was here surrounded by his loved ones.

She cooked for them wondering what he ate.

If he ate.

Sometimes she too couldn’t eat.

She retched.

She’d tell him tonight.

What if someone overheard?

But there was a bigger hurdle.

He had threatened he wouldn’t speak to her.

Unless…

“I love you,” she practiced with the winds.

A/N This is a whimsical continuation of my primary submission – Uncharted Territory – for the Friday Fictioneers. And also another possible scenario – Lost and Found. Forgive me Rochelle for testing your kindness.

Lost and Found

I love you.

That day, when he had uttered those magical words, she had been unable to respond.

But as the maid hung out the washing, she was glad her parents had rejected his marriage proposal.

She looked out into the horizon.

He was somewhere beyond the mountains, still struggling to eke out a decent living.

While she had everything, a good home, family and material comfort – what more could a girl ask for?

Nothing.

Except…

If only her husband could touch her heart, make it thud, like he had.

I love you, she whispered to the winds.
