Sakshi hesitated outside.

The prospective groom and his family were inside.

Was she fair? Tall?


Could she sing and dance? Cook. Knit. Run?

Perhaps she should run.

She would have, if only Rohan had come through.

But he had chickened out.

“Sorry,” he had mumbled. “I can’t break my mother’s heart. But I will always love you.”

“Sakshi!” Her mother pulled her in. “Meet Lata, my childhood friend. It was our dream to see our children marry.”

Sakshi stilled.

“My prayers are answered,” Rohan whispered as Sakshi was led towards him.

“So are mine.”

Sakshi walked away.
