SPF: Happy New Year

Happy New Year

Words 200

It was New Year’s Eve.

Like any special occasion, they celebrated in style.

“Let’s go for a movie.”

“Crowded places are risky.”

“How about dinner?”

He nodded. “Not a bad idea. Invite the Duttas.”

“I am in no mood to cook. Can’t we go out for dinner?”

“I am in no mood to change. It’s freezing…”

“The car is heated. So is the restaurant. Not like this mausoleum. Just a tiny blower…”

“Which you insist on monopolizing.”

“I thought you didn’t feel cold?”

“That was in my younger days, now I am old…”

“So you admit you are old?”

“What do you mean?”

“It must mean something!”

“I don’t want to fight with you.”

“That’s a first!” He snorted.

“I heard that!” She stalked out.

A deathly silence and darkness fell over their large rambling house.

She switched on the lights.

“Is electricity free under Modi’s rule?”

Ignoring him, she pottered around the kitchen.

“I thought you weren’t going to cook?”

“I’m making biryani.”

“What will the little one have?”

She pressed her lips but her eyes sparkled. “Soup.”

“Do you need anything from the market?”

“Yes but it’s freezing.”

“Nonsense. I was going out for a walk anyway.”
