Rajani finished rinsing the utensils. Time to sweep and mop the floor. She switched off the fans and silence descended.
It was better without the fan, Rajani decided. If only she could switch on the AC but she had heard enough about the electricity bill last month to back out. She swiftly swept the house and switched on the fan with relief.
No it wasnβt better without the fan. She splashed water on her face and stood under the fan to cool off. Another half hour and she could go back to maths she promised herself.
Just as she finished moping the drawing room, the doorbell rang. Who could that be Rajani wondered wiping away the sweat with her sleeve. Just hope it is not some neighborhood Aunty for a chitchat β that would mean chai, pakoras and in this heat! Hey Bhagwan was there no respite? Would it never end? Couldnβt it at least rain?
Perhaps it was Mummyji and Akash.
βRajji!β
Rajani stared blankly at Shikha. βYou?β She said stupidly.
βYes ME!β Shikha threw her arms around Rajani. βBuddhoo!β They hugged and laughed.
βYou look so grand?β Rajani drew back to look at her friend. βA pucca Memsahib!β She teased, half envious.
βTaadaa,β Shikha spread her arms and twirled around showing off her attire, βLook at my bag,β she held it out, βLouis Vuitton,β she said loftily and then spoilt it by giggling.
βOMG!β Rajani shrieked.
βAnd my shoes did you see? Howβs my new haircut?β She slipped the glasses off her head and shook her curls.
βWow!β Rajani stared. She felt like a frump. βWhy didnβt you tell me you were coming? I would have changedβ¦β
βI wanted it to be a surprise!β Shikha said. She looked her up and down. βAnd what is wrong with you?β
Rajani faltered. βWhat?β she looked down at herself. βThis? Oh this is my most comfortable summer suit. Come inside. Let me switch on the AC. It is so hot! How did you come? Will you stay for lunch? Would you like tea or something cold?β She blabbered.
βRelax Rajji! This is me, Shikhs not some neighborhood aunty that you have to follow formal protocols. Uff! All this khatirdari and mehmanawazi really gets on my nerves.β Shikha shuddered. βThank God, we donβt have any of this stuff at the home,β Rajani smiled to hear the a faint nasal twang, βall very casual and help yourself kinds.β She looked around as Rajani scrabbled around the fridge. Her eye fell on the tell tale bucket and mop. βYou were mopping the floor?β
βSo what?β Rajani handed her a glass of juice. βDonβt you clean up at home?β She deliberately stressed the accent.
Shikha stuck out her tongue at Rajani and grinned. βYep I do!β she frowned. βBut who does that in India? Whereβs the maid? On leave?β
βNot leave. Left.β Rajani put on the tea.
βI donβt want tea. Come and sit down. I came to talk to you not have tea and biscuits.β
βHow about pakoras?β Rajani grinned.
βGod!β Shikha groaned, βthe quintessential good bahu! Only the pallu is missing.β
βThatβs because thereβs no one at home!β Rajani could have bitten her tongue.
βReally?β Shikha was horrified.
βNo!β Rajani shook her head. βI was just kidding. But yes if someone is around, a dupatta is a must.β
βWow!β Shikha shook her head, βHow can you stay here?β she gave a shudder, βI am so glad I am away from all this nonsense. But tell me whereβs the maid?β
Rajani rolled her eyes. βDonβt ask.β She groaned. βWeβve run through three maids in the one month Iβve been here. They are so unreliable and such poor workersβ¦β
βSo you do all the work?β
βIf I donβt Mummyji will! And I couldnβt sit lolling about while an aged lady went down on her hands and knees mopping.β Rajani said defensively. βLetβs not talk about maids and kitchen politics. Letβs talk about the foreign returned guest,β she smiled and looked critically at her friend. βYou look lovely,β she said sincerely. At least she hadnβt got a raw deal. βMarriage suits you.β She smirked. βYouβve put on weight.β
βExcuse me,β Shikha huffed superiorly, βI am exactly as Amu loves β more of me to love,β she giggled.
Rajani laughed.
Shikha sobered. βBut whatβs up with you?β
βMe?β Rajani swallowed. βNothing. Why?β
βYou look so thin and scrawny. Run down almost.β
βRubbish. Itβs the heat. And I have to maintain my figure you know.β She struck a pose. But Shikha wasnβt convinced.
βAll okay Rajji?β she asked concernedly which was Rajaniβs undoing. Tears sprang to her eyes. She jumped up. βIβll be back in a minute. Iβll just put on some kichdiβ¦β
βKichdi? Yuck! I come all the way from the States and thatβs all you can think of feeding me? That too kichdi? Hey Bhagwan! What did I ever do you?β She pleaded.
Rajani laughed and shook her head. βDrama queen. Itβs not for you Madam, itβs for Akash.β
βAkash? Your SILβs son right?β Rajani nodded. βAre they coming over?β
βAkash stays here,β Rajani said as she moved around the kitchen putting away utensils, pulling out the cooker, βHis grandmother took him along to some relativeβs place for a condolence meet.β She looked at Shikha. βI was also supposed to go. What if I hadnt been home?β
Shikha shrugged. βI would have come another day! I am here for nearly three weeks. Why didnβt you go along with them?β
Rajani shrugged. βI had to study.β
Shikha looked around. βDoesnβt look like studying to me.β
βI was just taking a break. I was tired from all that sitting and sitting.β
βI donβt believe this Rajji!β Shikha was incredulous. βYou prefer housework to studying?β
βStranger things have been known to happen.β Rajani mumbled. βHere taste this laddoo. Howβs it?β
βMmm. Nice! Did you make it?β
Rajani nodded. βUnder my MILβs strict supervision and guidance of course. And these namkeens.β
βHmm. So tell me about your PhD plans.β
βOh thatβs still on!β Rajani said brightly. βI gave the written test and I am just waiting for the results.β
βYou did well in the test right?β Shikha said knowingly.
βYep I did!β Rajani grinned confidently. βI am more worried about the interview. God only knows what they will ask.β
βRelax. I am sure you will crack that as well.β
βThanks Shikhs. What about you? You were planning to take up a job werenβt you?β
βOh that!β Shikha pulled up a dining chair and sat down near the kitchen entrance as Rajani began dicing vegetables. βI am not keen on working. But when my MIL was there I was desperate to get out of the house! A job would give me freedom for 8 to 10 hours from that double-faced witch.β
βShikhs!β gasped Rajani scandalized.
βBe thankful I didnβt call her something worse.β Shikha rolled her eyes. βSheβs really something I tell you. The sweet darling for the world and &*&%& for me! Sheβs a thousand times worse than Biji.β
Rajani stared. βOh! That bad huh? What does she do?β
Shikha made a face. βShe exists.β
Rajani gaped all round-eyed before going off into one of her fits.

Rajji now the maid AND the nanny AND the cook, and making excuses for her situation? This is becoming unbelievable…aren’t her parents aware of what’s happening? And fat and happy Shikha back from Amreeka- its sad to see the friends growing apart.

Sorry Nisha I totally get you or anybody else feeling depressed. It is a sad state of affairs and for Rajani fooling herself and making excuses is the only way she can deal with this impossible situation. Until she cant. The problem is that things arent even that bad yet – till now this is what we can call the ‘norm’ – unfortunate but there it is. A new bahu is expected to take on as much as possible to ensure acceptance isnt it? Anybody not doing so would be branded a housebreaker wouldn’t she? The onus is on her to make a ‘success’ of this marriage. She has to adjust and compromise. Until she reaches a point of enough is enough. Thank you for your support and company π

Has the fight left her? While this “adjustment” of turning a blind eye towards these transgressions might prevent her from getting saddened/enraged daily, how can it go on like this without losing a sense of yourself? At least Shikha’s visit must’ve been a bright spot in her day
