FF: Of Choices

Words 100

“Stay here for a bit.” She instructed and vanished.

Devika didn’t even notice that she was alone.

Red!

Blue!

Green!

The rectangular ones?

But the square yellow ones were the most sought after.

What about those on the topmost shelf?

Dare she climb that high?

What if she fell off and hurt herself?

Perhaps the nearest ones would be safest.

Yet, the pink ones tugged at her heart.

She looked around wishing, wanting, dithering until she was dizzy.

“Dear Mother,” she folded her hands, “give me what You think is best for me and let me be content in that.”

  1. I hope the mother knows what her daughter likes. I love going to the sweet shops but I always end up buying PEZ. The magazine shops or grocery shops have a shelf full of one a penny or two a penny sweets for the kids accompanying the adults. I remember one time my seven year old nephew had 50p to spend on buying sweets. So he stood at the counter and was working out how many 1penny ,2 penny and 5penny sweets he can buy. He spent the whole 50p buying different sweets , unlike his older brother who would buy anything he wants and expect me to pay for them.

  2. When we have so many choices in front of us it is difficult to select one because we always think the other will be better than the one we selected that is the state of the little girl here but was glad she took the right decision of asking her mother to choose for her thinking she will do the best for her.
    Loved it

  3. Dahlia, A very creative and sobering spin on the image. I kind of feel bad for Devika. Maybe the family has no means for her to have even one piece of candy. Good as a metaphor.
