 Of Time and Monsters

Words 200

“I am not having that dog in the house…”

“I got it for Rajkumari.”

“What next? A car?” His wife, Rukmini was put out.

“If she wants one she’ll get one.”

“What about the expense?

“I got it all sorted. Now don’t sulk and put a spoke in her happiness.”

The only daughter in the house and only sister to four brothers, Rajkumari was the darling of the family.

“You shouldn’t pamper her so much. Don’t forget, soon she will get married…”

“She’s going to stay right here.”

“Which self-respecting man will stay at his in-laws’ house?”

“My Prince is already here.” Rajkumari held up the squirming puppy.

Sohanlal laughed.

When Rajkumari joined college, Sohanlal threw a party for the entire village.

Rajkumari was the first in the family to go to college.

Sohanlal took a loan to buy her a car.

He didn’t want her traveling with the riff-raff.

At college, Rajkumari found love.

He was handsome, rich and educated.

Rajkumari took him home.

He was perfect.

But of a different caste.

Sohanlal tried to convince Rajkumari but she stuck to her guns.

Sohanlal had no choice but to make the ultimate and final sacrifice.

With a kitchen knife.
