The year was coming to an end and there was a festive air at the office. Groups of employees huddled around in bunches discussed the upcoming Christmas party and their plans to welcome in the New year. Team leaders and bosses were also in a mellow mood and considerately looked the other way.
Except for Sheena.
She was in a foul mood and didnβt care who knew it. βWhat the hell are you guys doing out in the corridor.β She looked at her watch. βThereβs still an hour before closing time.β
There was silence.
βWell?β she snapped, her eyes boring into each of them.
Nitin succumbed to the hypnotic glare. βNothing Maβam, justβ¦just talking about the party.β
βThe party is tomorrow night. If you donβt have any work let me know I can alwaysβ¦β The corridor cleared up in an instant.
Unappeased, Sheena continued her march down the corridor. She halted outside the last door on the right. She burst into Riteishβs office without even bothering to knock.
Riteish, who was busy mumbling sweet-nothings into the phone, looked up in surprise. βHey T, gotta go. Yeah me too. Bye.β He put down the phone. βAnd a very good evening to you Shinee.β
βDonβt call me that,β she snapped irritably and prowled the office floor.
Riteish raised an eyebrow. βAh that time of theβ¦β He coughed to hide his grin.
She stopped in her track and glared at him. βThatβs out-dated stuff buddy.β
βExcuse me?β
βApparently you are not privy to the Whatsapp joke going around.β
Riteish scratched his head. βErrβ¦no what?β
βThat time of the month,β hands on her hips, she said with emphasis, βallows women to do once a month what men do the whole month.β
Riteish gave a crack of laughter. βTouchΓ©!β He waved a hand. βPlease sit. Here,β he got up and pulled a chair for her.
Reluctantly Sheena slid into it. She slipped off her heels and wiggled her toes in relief.
Riteish went back to his seat. βTea, coffee orβ¦β he grinned engagingly.
Sheena was unmoved. If anything, she was even more cheesed off. βDonβt miss a chance to flirt do you? Even with me? Where neither of us are interested?β
βHabit.β He shrugged. βBesides, practice makes a man perfect.β He looked at her with a lost puppy dog expression.
βArgghh. Men.β Sheena made it sound like an expletive.
βOkay fine.β Riteish held up his hands in surrender. βI guess you are really upset about something. What is it? Is it something related to work, office staff orβ¦β
βAditya.β Sheena came clean.
Riteish stiffened and looked warily at her. βAditya? Your husband?β
βNo. Aditya, your friend.β Sheena sneered. βHow many Adityas do you know?β
βOh no not again.β Riteish shook his head. βYou know Sheena, husband and wife should never work in the same office. Too intrusive, you know, neither gets any space, freedom, you know what I mean?β
βYeah sure I do,β Sheena said sourly, βand exactly the reason I cannot leave this office. I donβt want to give him his space, his freedom. He canβt control himself while I am here and if I leave, then, oh boy.β Sheena snorted derisively.
βWhat do you mean?β
βOh please Riteish. Donβt act so innocent huh? I know all about you men and your rules – you save my back and I will save yours.β
βDonβt talk nonsense Shinee. There is no such rule.β
She looked at him disbelievingly. βYeah right and the sun rises in the West. Besides, donβt forget, I know Adi. Before we got married, we were colleagues. I know his modus operandi. That helpless dazed look is cultivated with great care and finesse. It is specifically aimed to trap foolish young womenβ¦β
βHey, hey, hold your horses girl! You really have become like the typical suspicious nagging wives. No sooner has a chap talked to a female colleague, bas they are having an affair. Nonsense.β
βOh really. So are you trying to tell me nothing is going on between Adi and Steina?β
Riteish laughed. βSteina and Adi? Donβt be silly Shinee.β
βYeah? How about a bet then? One lakh says that they shared the hotel room while they were in Hyderabad?
Riteish stared. βOne lakh.β He was taken aback but he recovered quickly. βCome on. Thatβs taking it a bit too far,β he said. βHave some faith in Aditya. The poor chap is really a good boy. He never looked at a girl, not even in school.β He snickered. βI doubt if he has looked at you properly in the six months or so that you have been married.β
Sheena glared at him. βThat woman, Steina,β Sheena said, βis openly declaring to all and sundry that Aditya bought her the bracelet at the Bangalore airport and she is wearing it for a special date tonight! As if I donβt know who that date is!β Sheena fumed. βVery conveniently, Aditya is working late tonight.β Sheena paced the floor restlessly and stopped in front of Riteishβs desk. βTell me, wouldnβt you be suspicious?β
Riteish seemed to be be wrestling with something. He drummed his fingers on the table. He leaned forward. βDo you know Sheena,β he said as if coming to a decision, βthat your husband also asked me the same question about you last week?β
Sheena looked at Riteish blankly. βWhat question?β
Riteish leaned back and passed a hand over his face. βHe asked me if you were having an affair with Sreejit.β His voice was muffled.
βSreejit!β Sheena jumped off the chair. βIs he crazy or what? Sree and I practically grew up together. We are like siblings.β She shuddered. βHow could Aditya even think that Sree and I could everβ¦β she broke off unable to say it.
Riteish played with the paperweight and avoided meeting Sheenaβs eyes.
βBut, but why would he think such a thing of me?β Sheena was bewildered. Her temper rose and so did her pitch. βAnd why the hell would he ask you?β She looked at him suspiciously. βYou are lying,β she said flatly.
Riteish looked offended. βWhy would I lie? What purpose would it serve?β He raised his hands. βLook, just calm down will you? He asked me because of the same reason you asked me β you are both my friends.β
He paused. βBesides, you have been spending a lot of time with Sree lately. You even flew to meet him in Kolkata last Sunday, stayed overnight at his flat, took a day off from office in the middle of a looming deadline,β he fell silent.
βOh,β Sheena nodded her head knowingly, βso you also think that β you know what? Forget it.β She grabbed her bag. βI am leaving ββ
βHey, hang on,β Riteish was up in a trice, βI donβt think anything of the sort,β he coughed, βbut the facts are pretty damning arenβt they? Honestly I canβt say I blame him for drawing his own conclusions.β
Sheena glared at him, βSree is having serious issues with his live-in girlfriend and I just went to see if I could sort out things,β she clarified. βBut both of you have judged me and condemned me without the courtesy of a fair hearing havenβt you?β
βArenβt you doing the same to Aditya?β Riteish pointed out gently. βDid you ask him what his relationship with Steina is or what, if anything, is going on between the two?β
βI canβt believe Aditya doubts me over Sree,β muttered Sheena despondently, βI texted him before leaving and even sent him a detailed email from the airport. But that doesnβt justify Adityaβs going around with Steina, giving her expensive gifts.β Sheenaβs voice trembled and she turned away.
Riteish sighed and fidgeted before picking up the intercom. βHi Aditya,β he said casually even as Sheena started hyperventilating, βbusy? Can you come over to my office now? Yeah,β he looked at Sheena who was vehemently shaking her head, βyou can say it is pretty urgent. Okay then, see you in a bit.β He put down the phone. βHe is coming,β he said rather unnecessarily.
βAnd I am leaving,β Sheena stood up but Riteish blocked her path, βNo way Sheena. Itβs time you both talked it out, sorted out your differences face to face rather than using me as your punching board.β
βI refuse to talk to someone who discusses his wife with another person,β Sheena said stiffly.
βUnbelievable Sheena, unbelievable,β Riteish shook his head and threw up his hands, βa case of the kettle calling the pot black!β
βWhat did I do?β Sheena flared up, βI was upset, at my tethers end, I need a friend to talk to. It was either this or jump off the building,β she burst into tears just as Aditya entered the room.
Aditya stopped short. He looked warily at Sheena and then at Riteish, βIβ¦I think I will come back later,β he muttered and hurriedly backed out.
But Riteish was faster, he grabbed his arm and dragged him back, βOh no, no, neither of you is going anywhere until you have talked it out.β He picked up his bag, βI am leaving, you two talk it out,β he waved his hands, βmy office is all yours.β
This time Aditya grabbed Riteishβs arm, βDonβt leave me here alone with her please,β he begged.
βShe is your wife dammit!β Riteish was incredulous.
Tears forgotten, Sheena jumped to her feet. βDonβt you dare leave me alone in this room with thisβ¦this monster!β
βSee?β Aditya said in an aside to Riteish, βSee how she screeches? No consideration for the fact that this is an office,β he groaned. He kept his voice low and Sheena had to strain to hear, βItβs impossible to talk to her, she either screams or bursts into tears.β
βLet her,β said Riteish unconcernedly, βitβs way past office closing time and thereβs nobody except the guard, and,β he grinned, βhe is hard of hearing.β
He patted Aditya, βListen to me and fight it out right here. No interfering neighbors and I will warn the guard not to let anybody disturb you,β he squeezed Adityaβs shoulder encouragingly, while Sheena muttered in the background, βSo I screech is it?β
βWhy are you doing this?β Aditya urgently whispered. βStay, donβt go please.β His voice firmed and he clutched Riteish, βIf you leave, I too will leave.β Realizing that he was panicking, he attempted to retrieve his dignity by straightening his coat and pushing back his spectacles.
Riteish looked heavenwards and then at Sheena who was still sniffing, βLook at him, just look at him,β he said. βDo you really think that this man,β he clapped a hearty hand on Adityaβs quivering shoulder, βcan actually have an affair with another woman when he is afraid to be in the same room as his wife?β
βRiteish!β Sheena and Aditya chorused in unison. Aditya backed away nervously as Sheena opened her mouth to begin her tirade, βWhat the hell do you mean Riteish? How dare you speak about my husband like this?β She was furious.
βSheena, Sheena,β Riteish sank down on the couch, βmake up your mind. Are you for him or against him?β
Sheena was stumped, βOh shut up Riteish!β she looked ready to tear her hair, βyou always do this!β She ground her teeth.
Riteish raised an eyebrow.
βConfuse me! I came here to talk about – β she cast a glance at Aditya and clammed up.
βGo on, spit it out Sheena,β encouraged Riteish, a hard glint in his eye. He kept his eyes firmly focused on Aditya.
She nodded her head grimly and boldly attacked Aditya. βWhat the hell is going on between you and that woman?β
Aditya stared at her uncomprehendingly. βMe and that woman? Which woman?β
βHey Shinee, he seems to be having an affair with more than one woman!β
Sheena shot Riteish a darkling look – one that said tere-ko-toh-main-baad-main-dekh-loongi look but refused to be diverted. She focused on Aditya. βNow donβt play the innocent! I know all about your office affair,β she said in an ominous tone. βYou and Steina.β
βSteina?β Aditya quavered. He looked towards Riteish, who stared back at him unblinkingly.
βGo on answer that.β Riteshβs tone was hard and unyielding. This time Sheena shot him a grateful look before attacking Aditya again.
βYes Steina! And drop that innocent act,β she flapped her arms wildly, βI heard it from the horseβs mouthβ¦β Emotions overcame her.
βHorseβs mouth?β repeated Aditya casting another pleading wild look at Riteish. Just as Sheena looked into her purse hunting for her handkerchief, he clasped his hands together and made begging and throat slashing motions at Riteish.
The grim lines around Riteishβs mouth eased.
She blew her nose. βYes, I overhead Steina telling whoever cared to listenβ¦β
βThat would make it the mareβs mouth,β Riteish interrupted helpfully.
Sheena turned to glare at Riteish who cowered and backed off. But his shoulders shook.
βYes what was she saying?β an uncharacteristically aggressive Aditya shot back.
βShe said that you bought her a 10k diamond bracelet at the Bangalore airport.β Sheenaβs voice rose to a crescendo and then choked on a sob.
βTsk, tsk,β said Riteish.
Aditya threw him a half-reproachful half-pleading glance.
βYeah, so?β asked Aditya.
βSo!β said Sheena, βyou wouldnβt be buying her a diamond bracelet unless you were – ,β she dissolved in a fresh storm of tears.
βTsk, tsk,β went Riteish again.
βShut up Riteish.β Aditya shook his fist at Riteish, who smothered a laugh.
Riteish turned to Sheena. βYes, Sheena,β he spoke gently, βI bought Steina a bracelet at the Bangalore airport but only because her credit card wasnβt working. Look,β he pulled out his wallet, β she paid me the money in cash today. Okay now?β
Stumped, Sheena stared at the wad of notes in Adityaβs wallet.
βBut how dare you discuss me with Riteish?β Sheena made a swift recovery.
βDiscuss you with Riteish?β the hunted look was back.
βYes!β she said βDidnβt you say to him that I was having an affair with Sree?β She made a disgusted sound and turned her face away.
Aditya rolled his eyes frantically at Riteish, βWhen did I ever say such a thing?β
βYes, you did! Ask Riteish.β They both turned to Riteish. βTell him,β ordered Sheena.
βTell him what?β Riteish said mildly.
βThat he said to you that I had slept with Sree!β Sheenaβs voice hit the roof.
Aditya recoiled in horror. βI never said that! Sree is a great guy, he would never do such a thing.β Aditya vouched for Sreeβs character.
βBut I would?β pounced Sheena. βSree is a great guy, he would never do such a thing!β she mimicked him. βBut you arenβt so sure about me are you?β
Aditya winced. βI didnβt mean it like that,β he mumbled.
βThen what did you mean?β Sheena cornered her husband.
He caught sight of Riteish clutching his stomach and lolling about on the sofa, βHow the hell can I mean anything when I didnβt say anything! Why donβt you ask Riteish?β
Riteish casually got to his feet and stretched lazily. βGosh! Just look at the time! I better go. You guys carry on. Doing just beautifully. Iβll just get my bag.β
βWait!β Aditya wore an arrested expression. He caught hold of him by the lapels, βJust what have you been telling Sheena?β he asked dangerously and actually shook him threateningly.
Riteish looked at him reproachfully, βMy dear fellow, is this any way to thank your friend?β
Aditya looked at him suspiciously, βAnd just what do you mean by that? Donβt tell me all this brouhaha is all your doing?β
Riteish scratched his head. βGuilty as charged milord,β he said meekly. βThe thing is my dear fellow,β he added hastily as Aditya and Sheena both glared at him, βI was getting tired of playing referee between the two of you. For heavenβs sake, itβs high time you guys started talking to each other instead of always dragging me in the middle. After all, what is my crime?β he asked. βJust that I arranged your marriage?β he held his ears. βForgive me this one transgression,β he pleaded. βNever again, I promise, never again.β
Riteish put his arm around Sheena. βAditya was just worried about Sree because you just dashed off to Kolkata. I, err,β he coughed, βI just added some spice to give you a taste of how Aditya feels when you discuss him with me.β
Sheena looked down at her shoes.
βCheer up Sheena,β Riteish winked at Aditya who had his hands folded and was bowing to him from behind Sheenaβs back, βI am sure you know how to make it up to him.β
The door opened and Steina popped her head in.
All three occupants froze.
βOh hi, there you are,β she simpered to a suddenly wooden Aditya, βI went to your office, arenβt we -,β she clammed up as she caught sight of Sheena.
Aditya frantically rolled his eyes at Riteish who smoothly stepped in. βHey T. Right on time.β He looked at his watch. βCome, letβs go, otherwise we will be late,β he hustled Steina out. βBye guys,β he called as he shut the door behind him.
Aditya wiped his forehead and loosened his tie. βI think we better get going too, it is pretty late.β He coughed.
βI am sorry Adi for having doubted you and having discussed you with Riteish.β Sheena was contrite. βI promise I wonβt ever do that again.β She slid her arms around him.
Aditya drew her close, relief evident on his face.
βBut Adi,β she looked up at him, βdoes that mean Steina is having an affair with Riteish?β
Aditya blenched.
βDoes Bhabhi know?β she said in a hushed whisper.
βOh no, its nothing like that,β said Aditya in a strangled voice, βitβs a business dinner, with some clients,β he said glibly.
βOkay,β Sheena chewed her fingernail, βbut then why did Steina boast about a dinner date?β
βWho knows? Women are impossible.β
