Harry he didnβt have any concrete plan as to what he wanted to do when he found Manu. All he knew was that Rajani was upset and that made him want to thrash the over-smart goonda.
He turned the corner and wondered which way to go. Then he heard it β a string of curses.
Harry clenched his fists and set off in hot pursuit. He stopped short.
Manu was involved in some intricate dance routine β jump, twist left, chin down, hop and twist right.
Harry could only stare β Collage practice? He wondered a bit skeptically. He coughed.
Manu froze. He looked warily at Harry.
βWhatβs the matter?β Harry asked mildly. βPracticing for the dance competition?β
βNo! Go away.β
βWhy are you jumping about as if you have ants in your pants? And whatβs that dripping down the front of your shirt?β
βThatβs tea.β
βTea?β
βYeah, I was just sitting here quietly enjoying a cup of tea,β he waved his hands at the remnants of the party, βsamosas and pakoras. You know the that awesome tea guy just outside the campus?β
Harry nodded.
βYeah well I was just sitting here enjoying the trees and the birds when…when I stumbled and the tea fell down over my shirt.β
βHow come the samosas and pakoras look so squashed and weird?β The stone ledge looked like a mini battlefield.
βI told you,β Manu responded in a surly tone, βI stumbled and sat down with a thud on the remaining pakoras and samosas.β
βSomebody else was also here with you?β
βNo. I was alone.β
βThere are two cups.β
βYeah so?β Manu blustered. βI like this tea. I bought 2 cups for myself.β
βHmm.β Harry wasnβt too convinced. βI thought you were sitting down and enjoying your tea. How and why did you stumble?β
βWhatβs this? The Spanish Inquisition? I donβt have to answer any question. I am leaving.β Manu turned on his heel and strode off.
βHey! Hey! What aboutβ¦?β Harry burst into laughter but Manu didnβt turn around. Perhaps he didnβt hear. Perhaps he didnβt want to risk it. Or he knew what Harry was laughing about.
βWhat were you laughing about?β The girls asked.
Harryβs grin widened.
βHe said that he stumbled and sat down on the samosas and pakoras.β The girls nodded. βWell the oil had soaked into the jeans and made a large round distinctive patch on his bum.β
They burst into gales of laughter.
βOh how I wish I could have seen it!β Rajani said much later after her giggles had subsided. βHe must have stumbled when I pushed him.β
βWhy did you push him?β Harry asked. That was the only missing link now.
Rajani flushed and mumbled incoherently.
βWhat?β
βNothing. Letβs go or we will miss the Dumb Charades.β She said.
βI think I have had enough of charades for the day.β Harry said. βWill you guys be okay?β
They nodded. He strode off. But he turned back almost instantly. βWasβ¦was Manuβ¦did Manu, I mean did heβ¦was he wasβ¦he improper?β Harry was red by the time he manage to disgorge the thought uppermost in his mind.
Rajani followed suit and went a deep red. She dropped her eyes and shook her head.
βOkay. Bye.β Harryβs voice was curt.
βWhy did you lie to him?β Shikha pounced the moment Harry was out of earshot.
βI didnβt want him to get the wrong message.β
βWhat wrong message?β
βYou know what.β Rajani scuffed her shoe.
βNo I donβt know.β
βHe may think I encouraged Manu. That I am βthatβ kind of a girl.β
βUfff Rajji please!β Shikha groaned. βWhy would he think that?β
βI donβt know,β Rajani shrugged. βDidnβt you see how strict and stern he looked? Did Manu do anything improper?β she imitated his deep voice.
βSo whatβs wrong with that? Maybe Manu said something to him, or maybe even told him the truthβ¦β
βNo!β Rajani was shocked. βNo!β
βWhy are you so panic stricken?β
βWhat will everyone think?β
βWhat does it matter what they think? You are okay right? Your conscience is clear. You didnβt do anything wrongβ¦β
βI shouldnβt have gone with him.β Rajani interrupted. βI should have listened to you.β
βYes you should have!β Shikha retorted. βMake sure to remember that.β She melted. βNever mind about today. No harm done and hopefully a lesson well learned.β
Rajani swallowed and nodded.
Shikha looked at Rajani. βUmm, errβ¦umm, how was it?β
Rajani looked up confused. Her brow cleared. She shook her head. βI have no idea! My first kiss and I have no clue. How bizarre is that?β
βNot bizarre at all considering it you Rajji.β Shikha rued.
Rajani made a moue. βI was so stunned and taken aback that it didnβt really register. It felt a bit funny. Weird. Icky.β
βStill think Manu is handsome?β Shikha slipped in slyly.
βYeah!β Rajani retorted spiritedly. βBut I donβt like him as much.β
βWhat if he comes back tomorrow and says he doesnβt understand why you ran away and that you instigated the kissβ¦β
βHawww!β Rajani was horrified, βhe wouldnβt do that would he?β
βPerhaps not. But what if he does? Maybe he does genuinely care for you?β
βI donβt know what you are getting at Shikhs, first you dissuade me from going out with him and now you make excuses for him. What do you want me to do?β
βNothing. I am just playing the Devilβs Advocate here. And trying to understand whatβs going on in that head of yours. I have to be ready for the next craziness do I not?β
βVery funny. I have decided I am going to focus on studies from now on. Only studies, no hanky-panky from now on.β
βAmen.β Shikha sent up a fervent prayer.
Giggling the girls ran off to catch the last bit of the Dumb Charades, which was again well attended. As they squeezed in, Rajani couldnβt help but remember the JAM session. How Manu and she had been so close. How his breath had tickled her ear, making her feel funny and breathless.
Shikha nudged her. βWhat happened?β she whispered.
βNothing.β Rajani mumbled keeping her face averted knowing her face would give her away. She wasnβt sure she wanted to discuss that with Shikha. It had been such a sweet special moment β she wanted to hold on to it, sharing it would belittle it. What if Shikha gave her another earful?
Stop it Rajani. Have you completely lost? Mooning about a sweet special moment with that creep? He just molested you, for Godβs sake. Rajani castigated herself.
Had he? Honestly? Perhaps he had sensed her crush and taken it as willingness. Hadnβt she leaned towards him the fraction of a millimeter? Hadnβt she wanted him to take the lead and now the blame?
Rajani felt uncomfortable. Maybe she was to blame after all.
Up next Chapter 104: At Crossroads
A/N Hello friends! What’s up? No news is good news? Or am I rambling on all by myself (and MM!). Well anyway, 100 chapters is a bit much and I think it’s time to stop and reflect – perhaps take a time leap? Enough of Collage and college – time to move on don’t you think?
Let me know what your thoughts are on the matter (MM included) to help me take a decision on the future course of the story. Else I will be back with Moonshine (as I see fit) on the 14th of DecemberΒ (after I wrap up travels and weddings) π But I do hope to be posting the occasional flash fiction (perhaps sit on DM’s desk) and photos during this period – do check them out if you have the time and the inclination. Be good – and mark your attendance π
Should say Rajji handled it well..a lesson well learned as Shikha said!…but that misplaced guilt …a very very common one but still an unwarranted one…
Enjoy your outings and the wedding…more than 2 wks break for MS…wapas aake yeh mat bolna kee “I am so exhausted” :P…hope by Dec 15 you would have a bucket full of crazy ideas for Rani that we would enjoy reading…I do feel a leap would do good , that is only if you think that she has no other important lessons to be learned or no other characteristic of her’s need to be out at this point of time π

Actually I counted – just 4 posts of MS – 2 weeks sounds like ages π Thanks MM for being there – hamesha π And you do have a point in the end – I need to think! Which hopefully i will do π
