 Microphones were being thrust into his face, “How does it feel to have reached the top? To be where very few have ever been?”

Raj stared at himself onscreen. Were the thudding heart, the screaming nerves and the shakiness discernible?

He didn’t think so as he saw himself flash his famous crooked smile, raise his expensive shades with panache and wave to the hysterical milling crowd.

“Great. Just great.”

What would they have said if he had told them the truth? That he felt no joy in it. That he often wished he were still at the bottom of the ladder, his dreams and innocence intact?

“What message would you like to give to your fans?”

Cherish the little moments, call your mother, play with your children, choose your friends with care, eschew dark corners, treacherous turns and rotting boards. Most of all – beware of your own traitorous hand that rises to strike the fatal blow.

He pumped his fist in the air. “Just go for it!”

  6. Just loved the message and well conveyed in the story Dahlia! I have often felt the same.. Not felt any joy in my mini achievements and often wondered why… And we find ourselves saying “just go for it” because you want to keep the inspiration alive. To instill fire in people around you. Could totally relate to it!

  7. Well, he did match his lines to the expectation of those with a view from the bottom….wonder if anything else from him would have been accepted!…nice take on his emotions.

  8. Wonderfully written… a view of the top from the bottom, an illusion. Loved “beware of your own traitorous hand that rises to strike the fatal blow”…. puurrrffectt!!!

  11. Others SHOES, OTHERS LIFE ALWAYS APPEARS TO BE BETTER THAN OURS THERE IS NOT DOUBT in this, its a skewed vision how we want to see, yet the one wearing the shoes can only know the blistters they have hidden underneath.
